How to Get a Library Card
Anyone can get a Sault Ste. Marie Public Library card by visiting any one of our three library locations. To register you will need to bring with you one piece of photo identification, or two pieces of non-photo identification, showing your name and current address.
A parent or guardian must sign the library card of a child or a student (up to and including grade 6). The person signing the child’s or student’s library card is responsible for the choice of all materials borrowed by the child as well as the return of all materials borrowed, and pay fines, replacement and processing costs for lost or damaged materials.
All library card holders are expected to be knowledgeable of, and abide by, library rules, regulations and policies.
A Sault Ste. Marie Public Library Card:
> Is free to residents of Sault Ste. Marie; to all children and elementary and secondary school students; if you live in a contracting community. Others pay a fee.
> Can be used at any of the three Sault Ste. Marie Public Library locations.
> Gives you borrowing privileges of library materials.
> Allows you to place holds on library materials.
> Gives you access to Your Account when used with necessary PIN (Personal Identification Number). In Your Account you can check what you have on loan, renew loans, place holds and cancel holds.
> Provides access to the library’s online databases from the comfort of your home or office.

Online Library Card Registration – Online database access only.
At the present time, our online registration is available to the permanent residents of the City of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario only . If you live outside the City of Sault Ste. Marie please visit any one of our three locations to register for a library card which gives you full library card privileges.
Read the Following Information Before You Apply Online:
1. Use of an online library card is limited to accessing our online databases. Library materials cannot be borrowed with this type of library card and holds cannot be placed on library materials. Your online library card can be upgraded to a one with full privileges by visiting the Sault Ste. Marie Public Library so your registration information can be verified with the proper identification. Remember to bring along the library card sent to you when you registered online.
2. If you have a Sault Ste. Marie Public Library card you already have full library privileges. You will not be issued another card if you already have a library card.
3. If you are a child or a student up and including grade 6, library staff will contact your parent or guardian to verify that you have permission to apply for an online library card.
4. When your registration information has been verified a library card number will be emailed to you.
