About Us

The Friends of the Sault Ste. Marie Public Library was formed in 1990 to bring together people who share an enthusiasm for the library, to promote and encourage public awareness and appreciation of the library, and to support the work of the library in our community.

The Sault Ste. Marie Public Library Board believed a Friends of the Library group would enhance the delivery of library services. On October 16, 1989, the Sault Ste. Marie Public Library Board unanimously endorsed the formation of a Friends of the Library organization, pledging $2,000 towards start-up costs.

Following a public meeting in early 1990, a working group was formed which drafted a constitution and membership structure. The first official meeting of the newly formed Friends of the Library was held on September 18, 1990, at which time the Friends adopted a constitution and elected an Executive.

Since their formation in 1990, the Friends of the Library have raised over $300,000 for the purchase of new library materials, for magazine subscriptions and for sponsorship of numerous library programs.

Friends volunteers generously donate countless hours for the various activities they undertake each year. They also advocate for library services when the need arises.

The Friends of the Library are an active and dedicated group of volunteers whose passion for the public library is evident in their enthusiasm and support of library services in our community.
