Genealogy

The Main Branch of the Sault Ste. Marie Public Library has many resources available to assist you with your genealogical research. The collection focuses on Sault Ste. Marie and the Algoma District.  Additionally, the library’s Interlibrary loan service is able to obtain resources from other institutions such as the Library/Archives Canada and the Archives of Ontario.

Books about genealogy including manuals and guides on how to get started can be found under the Dewey number 929 in both the Circulating Collection (books that may be taken out) and the Reference Collection (books that must be used in the library).

Located next to the Information Desk at the Main Branch is the Genealogy Index Table that holds a selection of the most often consulted genealogy books in the Library’s Reference Collection. Here you will find census transcriptions, cemetery transcriptions and an index to birth, marriage and death announcements from the Sault Star.

The Main Library also has a large microfilm collection that includes census for Ontario and other parts of Canada as well as various newspapers including the Sault Star from 1901.  The Main Library has microfilm readers located in the hallway to the study area and microfilm printer/readers located next to the Information Desk.

A number of genealogical resources such as the Tanguay Dictionary, The Mackinac Register, 1695-1888, and the Inventaire des greffes des notaires du regime français can be found on the Multimedia Station located at the Information Desk at the Main Library.

Ancestry.com is available on the public internet workstations at all three locations of the Sault Ste. Marie Public Library.

As well, the Main Library houses the genealogical collection of the Sault Ste. Marie & District Chapter of the Ontario Genealogical Society.  This collection, which is located in the hallway to the Study Area and is freely available for all to use, holds additional census transcriptions, cemetery transcriptions, marriage registrations and many other books to help you research your family history.
